Cardiff Bay is an area of Cardiff in Wales, United Kingdom, originally known as Tiger Bay. This area is Wales' oldest multi-ethnic community with sailors and workers from over 50 countries settling here.
Once a notorious part of Wales, today Cardiff Bay is an eclectic mix of modern and times gone by, with a great fresh-water lake from the Rivers Taff and Ely. There are a large number of boat tours which operate from Mermaid Quay providing tours around the bay giving tourists information on the history of this exciting area. A water taxi, operating throughout the year, allows for easy travel from the Bay to the city and Penarth.
The harbour at Cardiff Bay has always had one of the worlds greatest tidal ranges. However, the construction of the barrage at the Bay has now acted as an inhibitor to the great tidal ranges, which sometimes prevented access to certain areas for hours at a time. This has now opened up new potential for the city with its greatest advantage being its waterfront.
